Change Your User Account Picture Easily in Windows

Changing your user account picture in Windows is a simple way to personalize your computer and make it feel more like your own. Whether you’re tired of the default picture or just want to refresh your look, Windows offers several easy ways to change it.

Method 1: Through Settings

This is the most straightforward method and works across different Windows versions, including Windows 10 and Windows 11.

  1. Open the Settings app. You can do this by pressing the Windows key + I or by searching for “Settings” in the Start Menu.
  2. Go to Accounts. In the Settings app, click on the Accounts option.
  3. Select Your info. In the Accounts section, select Your info on the left-hand menu. This is where you manage your profile information, including your account picture.
  4. Change your account picture. Under Adjust your photo, you’ll see options to Browse files to select a photo saved on your device, or if your device has a camera, select Open camera and take a new photo.
  5. Select a picture. After clicking Browse files, navigate through your files, find the image you want, select it, and click Choose picture. Your account picture will update immediately.

Method 2: Through Control Panel (Older Windows Versions)

While less common now, you can still access the option through the Control Panel in some older Windows versions.

  1. Access Control Panel. Press the Windows key, type Control Panel, and press Enter.
  2. Open User Accounts. In the Control Panel window, select User Accounts.
  3. Change your account picture. In the User Accounts section, click on Change your account picture.
  4. Select a new picture. You’ll be presented with options. You can either select a picture from the default Windows gallery or click on Browse for more pictures to choose an image from your files.
  5. Finalize the change. Once you’ve selected your picture, click Change Picture. This will immediately update your account picture.

Method 3: From the Start Menu (Older Versions)

In older versions of Windows 10, the profile picture setting could also be accessed through the start menu

  1. Open the Start Menu.
  2. Click on your user name (along with your pic) located at the top-left (or top) of the pane.
  3. Click on Change account settings.

Useful Tips

  • For the best results, use a square image with a clear, high-resolution photo.
  • Windows remembers the last three pictures you’ve used. You can switch to one of them quickly by selecting it on the “Your info” page in the Settings app.
