Create an image of a serene coastal village at golden hour, whitewashed buildings, ocean breeze, warm sunlight, cinematic landscape.

Quick Navigation: Settings → Personalization → Background → Choose your desktop background
Time needed: about 10 min

To create an image of a serene coastal village at golden hour, whitewashed buildings, ocean breeze, warm sunlight, cinematic landscape, you generate the picture in an image-creation tool and then apply it in Windows 11. The Windows settings page for this topic does not generate pictures. It controls how a saved image appears as your desktop background. This article covers both parts: writing the description and turning the result into your wallpaper.

  • Save the image to your PC, open Settings → Personalization → Background, and under Choose your desktop background pick the single-picture option and browse to the file.
  • Use Choose a picture fit to control whether the picture fills, fits or stretches across the screen.
  • Windows only displays the image. The picture itself comes from a separate image-creation tool.

How to create the village image and set it as your desktop background

1. Create and save the image

Open the image-creation tool you prefer and enter a description of the scene. For example: a serene coastal village at golden hour, whitewashed buildings, ocean breeze, warm sunlight, cinematic landscape.

A few details help the result work as a wallpaper:

  • Ask for a wide, landscape-oriented image, so it suits a widescreen display.
  • Keep the main subject, such as the white buildings, away from the very edges. Some fit options can crop the picture.
  • Save the finished image as a file on your PC, for example in your Pictures folder.

2. Open the background settings

Press Windows + I to launch Settings. In the left navigation pane, select Personalization, then select Background. You can also right-click an empty area of the desktop and choose the personalize command.

Alternatively, open the page directly:

⚙ Open "Background" in Settingsor press Win+R, type ms-settings:personalization-background, and press Enter

3. Choose the picture as your background

Find Choose your desktop background. Select the option that uses a single picture. Then use the browse button to locate the coastal village image you saved and select it.

The desktop changes immediately. The same setting also offers a solid color, a slideshow and Windows spotlight, which shows a new image from around the world each day.

4. Pick how the picture fits the screen

Open Choose a picture fit and choose a fit that suits your image. The choices behave like this:

  • The fill-style choice enlarges the image to cover the whole screen and may crop some of it.
  • The fit-style choice keeps the original proportions. If they differ from your screen, you may see bars at the sides or at the top and bottom.
  • The stretch-style choice covers the screen but can distort the scene when the proportions differ.
  • The tile, center and span choices repeat the image, place it unscaled in the middle, or spread it across several monitors.

For a cinematic landscape that matches your screen’s proportions, the fill-style choice usually gives the most immersive result.

5. Check the result

Press Windows + D to show the desktop and look at the image. If important parts are cut off, go back to Choose a picture fit and try another fit, or generate a new image with a different framing.

Other ways to apply the image

Set it from the file or the Photos app

You can skip the Settings page. Right-click the image file and choose the command that sets it as the desktop background. If you are viewing the picture in the Photos app, open the three-dot menu, choose the set-as command, then choose the background option.

Rotate several versions with a slideshow

If you generated several variations, such as different light or angles, put them in one folder. In Choose your desktop background, choose the slideshow option and select that folder. You can set how often the pictures change. Turn on Shuffle the background slideshow picture order if you want a random order. Right-clicking the desktop also lets you jump to the next background.

Multiple monitors and multiple desktops

  • With a single picture on several displays, right-click the picture preview in the settings and choose whether it applies to all displays or just one. This is not available if you use multiple desktops.
  • With a slideshow and several displays, each screen shows a different picture from the folder.
  • With multiple desktops, you can give each desktop its own picture by right-clicking a preview under the recent images. A separate picture per monitor and the slideshow are not supported in that case.
